Happy Birthday, Ryan AND Happy Halloween!!!

It's been awhile & I have lots of older pics to show, but for now I want to share our FANTASTIC celebration of Ryan's first birthday AND Halloween!

I decided to get a little ambitious and with the help of my super.crafty.professional.scrapbooking.neighbor.April we made these sweet invitations to our little one's party.
They read:
"Come dressed as a pirate or a ghost that says, "BOO"!
We'll have pizza and ice cream and a cupcake, or two!
Then off we'll go without skipping a beat
as we head out for the night to say,
"TRICK OR TREAT!"

These are a few of Ryan's 1 year pics

I didn't get her "professional" pics back in time to get her invitations made, so with my mom's help we perched our little punkin on a rock in the front yard and had a session of our own!

This wasn't our first attempt at getting some shots. We had the girls loaded, outfits packed, camera batteries charged, made our way to the Dallas Arboretum where we took Kella's 1 year pics in the same outfit. When we got there we got turned away twice saying it was full! What? How many acres is this place? Lots!!!! So, we kept driving and headed to the great fair of Texas (those pics to come...)

Gettin a taste of a plastic pumpkin!

This is the one we decided on for the invitations.

Here's my birthday girl the morning of...

Moving on to the party...

Since it was, well, Halloween, I decided to have all of our favorite sweets. First our guests got their fill of pizza, then moved on to the candy bar followed up with a sundae with all their favorite toppings at the ice cream bar!

This turned out to be my favorite.... the kiddos (and some adults!) could dig through the dirt (crumbled chocolate cake) for their favorite gummy treats! The tombstones helped make the treat a little more spooky.

I set up a little backdrop to get pics of all the kids to include in their thank-you cards. Here's a couple of the girls.

Kella with her buddy, Paris.

Some other treats that were a big hit was the smore station!

Okay, so I'm definitely NOT used to boys. I looked out at the playhouse as it was getting dark and someone had stuck Kella's umbrella in her chimney! Crazy kids!!!! Thanks to Cole for getting it down for me!

I learned from Kella's 1st b-day to keep the candle at arms length. She reached out and put out the candle while we were singing and almost started crying, so I kept Ryan's away right up until it was time.

Not quite sure what to do. Plus, she's never had such a crowd while eating. You can't tell by the pics, but there were about 10 kids about 2 feet away from her trying to get her to eat. All she wanted to do was look at them and laugh.

She really didn't get that interested. We thought once she actually got a taste in her mouth she would dive in, but.....not this girl! She only got all the icing on her hands because a couple of the boys were taking her hands and rubbing it on the cake!

The grandparents (and Ryan) took advantage of the golf cart once everyone headed out for trick-or-treating!

Some of our neighbors have this haunted house cut-out on their front porch which makes for a perfect backdrop for pics. We've taken them here every year that we've lived here.

Kella was fascinated with this spider. It had a string attached to the door, so it would raise when the door was opened. Kella thought that was amazing!

Thanks to Heather & Chad for always coming up to share Halloween with us! Luckily I had here there last year when Ryan was only hours old to help with handing out candy!

Kella helping out sweet Claire!

Our other neighbors own a golf cart supply, rental & repair shop. They got ours back up & running just in time for the party and brought one home to take along as well. It's hard to tell from the pics, but it has glowing green lights underneath. It was hysterical to hear people's comments all night regarding the carts. One kid said to his friend, "You think you've seen it all 'til you see a pimped out golf cart!"

I love how our neighbors go all out. This house had a fog machine (reason for the blurry pic) and the skeleton was mechanical looking like it was raising, or digging really, out of the grave. Kella was, again, intrigued. She kept wanting to touch it. She must get that from her dad!

We are in Texas Ranger country down here and the Rangers were playing in the World Series that night, so notice how most of the adults were wearing Rangers attire, some were shouting scores along our Halloween trail or this fella brought his flat screen onto his front porch not to miss an inning while handing out candy!

Our newly pregnant, mom-to-be, Heather was getting a little uncomfortable with all the walking, so she hitched a ride with our little ones.

Okay. This house, by far, goes ALL OUT!!! They truely have a "Tunnel of Terror" in their front yard. Kipp walked through with Kella and a guy dressed as Pinhead, among several others, were inside & out ready & waiting to scare those that dared to enter. Looking back, I don't think this was the best choice to submit our 3 1/2 yr old to, but she wanted to go. She said, "MOM! Is that boy going to get me? The one with the sharp hair!"

5 Years...Love you, daddy!

Sunday, October 17th marked the 5 year anniversary of losing my dad. This time of year has always been one of my favorites....the weather changes, football season, pumpkins, eating chili, state fair, building a fire & eating smores...you get the idea. But now, beginning in 2005, this time of year brings an almost over-whelming flood of memories of the days and weeks leading up to this date 10.17.05. Up until this point, dates had always had a positive reason for remembrance. Friends & families birthdays, weddings, birth of children, etc. It's not just the day, the 17th, that stands out, it's the thoughts of phone calls I made/received, miles & miles of traveling back & forth from Oklahoma to Dallas. The last week he was here I had gone to stay with him. I was there with him, by myself all day. He could hardly talk, I think he said only a handful of words that day, which was fine by me, cause on this day he knew me. He knew I was there and he knew who I was. Sounds like something pretty trivial, but weeks before when I had visited he didn't know me. That's a pretty tough thing to swallow when you make a 4 hour trip for the hundredth time, walk in and he knows he's supposed to know who you are, but I knew he didn't. He said, "Hi", eyes wide and searching mine and I asked, "Do you know me? Do you remember who I am?" Searching he said, "Are you my cousin?" and in the same breath he hugged me and apologized 'cause he knew he was wrong.
I spent the night in Oklahoma, got up & left at daylight to make it back to Dallas in time for work, which had become a typical routine for me. I think I had only been at work for a couple of hours when I got the call...my step-mom said she thought I needed to come back. "Okay." She said the hospice nurse said if it were her dad she would come back. I knew she had seen this enough to know what kind of time frame we were looking at. We had a million dollar plus listing that was finally under contract and the buyer needed inside just as I was leaving town. I should've went on, but I didn't. I showed the house and drove back to Oklahoma, getting to my dad's around 10:30pm....it was too late. My mom met me at my car, looking back I didn't even wonder why she was there, everyone was there. The funeral home was waiting to take him, but thankfully they waited on me to get there before they did. My brother wouldn't let anyone call me, what good would it've done to get the news while on the road, so they waited...
Saying all of that, leads me to this. Obviously, this has all been on my mind lately and last week a conversation was brought up that I didn't think would happen quite so soon... my mom was visiting, she, Kella, Ryan & I were having lunch when Kella noticed that I called mom, "Mom".
Kella: "Mom. Is Gibbie your mom?"
Me: "Yep! I'm YOUR mom & Gibbie is MY mom!"
Kella: (smiling) "She is!"
Kella: "Mom, who's your dad?" (she had this look of total confusion on her face)
Kella: "Is Skip your dad?"
Me: "Nope."
Kella: "He's not. (even more confused) WELL! Where's your dad?"
Me: (looking at mom, whose lips were sealed) "Well, he's with Jesus! Mommy's daddy got really sick and he died. But now, he's in heaven with Jesus!"
Kella: "Awwww.....he's sick?"
Me: "Well, baby, he was, but now he's with Jesus!"
Kella: "Well, my daddy's not sick!!!!"
Me: "You're right. Your daddy's NOT sick!"

That was about the extent at lunch, but I was completely floored. Oh, Lord! Did I say the right thing?! How clever she is to put this all together.

That night while tucking her in I was laying beside her and she asked again,
"Mom, is your daddy sick?"
Me: "Baby, he was, but he died.
Kella: "He did. And now he's with Jesus?"
Me: "He is. Mommy doesn't get to see her daddy anymore."
Kella: "You don't!"
Me: "Nope. And sometimes that makes mommy sad. I really miss him and I really wish I could see him."
Kella: "Awwww, mommy. (as she softly rubbed the side of my face) Are you sad?"
Me: "I'm not right now, but sometimes I am. I really miss him and I get sad sometimes, but it's okay."
Kella: "Do you love him?"
Me: "Of course! I love him sooooo much."
Kella: "Well I don't!!!"
Me: (gasp!) "You don't??!"
Kella: "No! I love YOU!"
Such sweetness!!!!

I think I've posted this before, but it's one of my favorites with my dad.
Last Christmas together.
His last birthday...July '05...he turned 59.

Carrie Underwood!

Seems like it's been such a long time since I've been to a real, ligit concert. I bought my ticket way back in May, with the intention of going with Heather & some of her friends, but plans change, so I ended up getting to take my mom! My neighbors, Angela & daughter Hailey were able to snag the other 2 tickets. What a fun night!
My pics aren't the best, but I got what I got and wanted to share!

Punkin patch

We headed to a local pumpkin patch for our friend Spence's 2nd birthday! These were some crazy, hungry goats!

Gotta love dad! He's always getting suckered into the ''train rides''!

Picking out the perfect pumpkin!

This is about the best shot we got of the girls together. Honestly, we were just trying to head home, mom & I had Carrie Underwood tickets and knew there would be plenty more chances to get pics in the weeks to come! Thanks to Spence for having his birthday at such a fun spot!

Can you hear me now?!?!

We typically get to Kella's school a little early which allows for some valuable swing time!

A few weeks ago, Kella was unusually hard.of.hearing. We were repeating ourselves like crazy. "What'd you say, Mom?" was becoming her slogan. So, we thought we'd give ear candles a try before jumping to any conclusions...

I promise, I won't disgust you with the ooey-gooey-details, but 2 rounds of those jewels and she's doin fine!

Better late than never....

Even though this is extremely late, I wanted to share our pics from Labor Day weekend.

Here we are making a pit stop on our road trip to Claremore, OK for the weekend! Girls are gettin' in some lovin's.

We finally made it to my Aunt & Uncle's house and Kella was so excited to see one of her favorite things.... a clock! They have had this hanging grandfather clock for as long as I can remember. Wherever we go, she spots them immediately. When talking about places we've been, if there was an interesting clock we are sure to discuss it....in great detail!

Feeding the sheep.

Mom & Skip were nice enough to bring the gator.
Getting to ride the 4-wheeler with dad!

Pool time!
Takin a break!
Takin a ride in the jeep with Meredith. (And Yes! Kella was definitely sporting her princess dress!)

Hitchin' a ride with Ashton!

We finally got all the kiddo's to take a break from swimming to take some family pics!

We had a great time spending the weekend with the family. Some of my best memories growing up are from our annual trips to Aunt Kathy's house, so I couldn't wait to take Kipp & the girls. Thanks for such a great weekend, Aunt Kathy & Uncle Tommy!!!!
